The statement by BRICS leaders, issued on Sunday (6), criticized protectionist measures adopted in global trade. The leaders reiterated their support for a rules-based, open, transparent, fair, inclusive, equitable, non-discriminatory, and consensual multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core. The WTO is an international organization that regulates international trade, ensuring that trade flows smoothly, predictably, and freely. The statement also called for special and differential treatment (SDT) for developing members of the WTO.

Trump, who took office in January of this year, announced an increase in tariffs on imported products at the beginning of his term. This move, which generated criticism and responses from several countries, has raised significant concerns about the potential consequences of his trade policies, stirring a sense of unease about the future of global trade.

United in their response, the BRICS countries, along with their 10 partner nations, stand firm against Trump’s threat. This united front, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Egypt, and Ethiopia, sends a strong message of solidarity. Ten other countries are partners of the group: Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
