Criminals stole eight prints by Henri Matisse and five prints by Candido Portinari, all belonging to the exhibition “From Book to Museum: MAM São Paulo and the Mário de Andrade Library”.
he stolen artworks were part of an exhibition held in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM). In an official statement, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy confirmed the number of pieces taken and emphasized that all the works have valid insurance policies.
“The department reports that the exhibited works have a valid insurance policy, and that the location has a security team and a security camera system. All material that may be useful for the investigation is being provided to the police authorities. The Military Police responded to the incident, and the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM) reinforced policing,” the department informed.
According to the Military Police, the two robbers overpowered the library’s security guards before fleeing towards the Anhangabaú Metro station. Teams in the vicinity provided immediate assistance to the employees and began searching the area, but so far no one has been arrested. There were no reports of injuries.
The city government of São Paulo reported that cameras from the Smart Sampa program identified the perpetrators of the crime.
