Aiming to meet the commitment made before the UN General Assembly in 2016, the Brazilian federal government will select civil society organizations interested in establishing partnerships to resettle Latin American refugees in Brazil.

The measure will allow the resettlement in Brazil of several immigrants from Central America who, despite being recognized as refugees, are still vulnerable and therefore need international protection.

The action helps fulfil the provisions of the Brazilian Refugee Law and of multiple international agreements of which Brazil is a signatory, such as the Mexico Plan of Action. By doing so, the country reinforces its commitment to the implementation of long-lasting solutions for refugees in the region.

According to the announcement, the public-private partnership will last for 12 months and must guarantee the provision of reception, housing and legal, social and psychological assistance services to incoming refugees. In all, 28 people will be resettled.
