The Brazilian singer and composer Flávia Bittencourt brings to the U.S. a little of the rich and diverse culture of her native state Maranhão through her more recent album, “Leve”. She launched the CD/DVD in New York with a pocket show called “Voice and Rhythm” in the gallery Saphira & Ventura on May 17th.

Flávia Bittencourt is one of Brazil’s most highly praised new singer and song-writers. Her cultural roots are present in the choice of repertoire that moves naturally between her compositions and those of song-writers from around the world.

Having rocketed to national fame in Brazil when one of her songs was picked up by a soap opera viewed at its height by 950,000 people. Flavia has toured Europe and has taken her original interpretations of traditional Brazilian folk music as far as Angola. She remains an independent artist with a very strong sense of identity.

Recorded by the record label Coqueiro Verde Records at Arthur Azevedo Theater in São Luís, capital of Maranhão, “Leve” celebrates the 10th anniversary of Flávia’s career. With a repertoire composed of original songs as well as those of long-standing authors, the singer boldly journeys through diverse rhythms, offering a plurality of content and creating a peculiar sonority that is completely Brazilian. This album featured entries from Luiz Melodia, Zeca Baleiro, Bloco Tradicional Os Feras, Alcione, Antulio Madureira.
