The National Library Foundation (FBN) was created 208 years ago, during the imperial period. In order to celebrate the date, Brazil commemorates National Book Day on October 29th. The institution’s collection, which is in the city of Rio de Janeiro, former capital city of the country, was brought over from Portugal by D.João VI.

Currently, the library is a reference in the dissemination of reading in Brazil. Moreover, it has already been recognized by Unesco as one of the ten largest national libraries in the world and the largest in Latin America. In addition to Portuguese works, the institution keeps historical documents that reconstruct the national memory.

This wealth is not restricted to the institution’s environment. Out of the nearly 9.2 million items in the National Library, about 2.5 million can be accessed over the internet and reach a wider audience.
