Brazil began exploring primary diamonds: the deposit, found in the municipality of Nordestina (“Northeastern”), is expected to double the country’s production and export this year and increase current volumes by 5 to 10 times in the coming years.

In addition to Nordestina, the Diamantes do Brasil (“Diamonds of Brazil”) Project, coordinated by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM), has revealed several areas with great potential for uncovering primary diamonds (“primary” diamond deposits are those in which the rough diamond is extracted directly from the source rock).

While these areas are not fully studied, “secondary” diamonds continue to be found by prospectors and small miners, mainly in the regions of Coromandel and Diamantina (state of Minas Gerais) and in some areas of the states of Goiás, Pará and Roraima. The project has also shown that the vast majority of Brazilian states have some occurrence of diamonds.
