This is a collective achievement for all who enjoy public services, especially cities without broadband: basic healthcare centres can use electronic medical records; public schools will have access to the internet. This means more information and better education for all.
Each municipality will indicate where the antennas will be installed to distribute the internet signal. In consideration, the municipalities must guarantee the security of the areas and pay the electricity costs to keep the antennas powered.
The first phase of the Internet for All programme should start in May this year. According to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC), Gilberto Kassab, 200 antennas should be installed per day. Telebras hired a US company, Viasat, to execute this stage of the process.
Internet For All will provide significant annual savings for the public healthcare system, according to Health Minister Ricardo Barros. “With the computerisation, the healthcare system can save as much as R$ 20 billion in examinations, consultations and medication dispensations that won’t have to be repeated”, the minister said.
In addition to healthcare and education, the Internet for All will also be a boon to national defence. The new satellite system will allow for “100% monitoring of Brazilian borders, expanding actions to fight drug and arms trafficking,” said the minister Kassab.
